Ellice Yang - Contemporary Abstract Artist

As a Toronto-based contemporary abstract artist, my work is a journey through the emotional and the intangible where colour and movement take the place of words that often fail to capture emotions and experiences that exist beyond language.  Influenced by personal loss and grief, art has been my way of processing these complex emotions and discovering the beauty and joy that exists, even in times of adversity.   

Through the use of contrasting elements, I create a delicate balance between vibrant colours and calm intentional gestures, that feels both spontaneous and deeply considered, allowing the flow of the medium to harmonize both intensity and serene flowing movements. 

I am endlessly captivated by the rich diversity of colours found in nature, which is a great inspiration for my creative process.  From the delicate hues of a fading sunset to the vibrant splashes of colour in a bird’s iridescent feathers, the natural world offers a vast palette that guides me.

My process of abstraction is both intuitive and strategic.  Each step is carefully planned as I contemplate how the colours will evolve as they expand and interact, creating depth, soft transitions and vivid contrasts.  However, when it comes time to blow out the paint, I allow for a spontaneous and organic flow to develop naturally.

This combination of fluidity and intention is what gives each piece a dynamic yet harmonious quality, a response to the flow of life, tapping into the energies and emotions that are often too complex or elusive to articulate and capturing a moment in motion.  My hope is to immerse the viewer with the unfiltered emotions that live in the spaces beyond words, a reminder that beauty and light exists even in the darkest of times.
